That's the journey so far for my newest screenplay, DEAD IN THE WATER, previously described here on this site.
When I first wrote the spec script, I decided to choose a very unlikely site for a shark movie: Kansas.
A scientist has to help police solve a series of murders that look like shark attacks along a river hundreds of miles inland. But after he convinces the authorities that the "shark attacks" actually are murders and helps nab two suspects, he has to battle an ancient ancestor of th…

Recently, I decided to write a really oddball "creature feature" horror script, and now I have come up with the first draft of a new feature screenplay called DEAD IN THE WATER. Here's the brief summary:
A well-known shark expert helps police "solve" a series of gruesome deaths that look like shark attacks, hundreds of miles inland along a river in Kansas. But after he convinces the authorities that the deaths are murders and helps nab two suspects, he has to fight an "extinct" ancestor of th…

My longest-optioned feature screenplay is once again in limbo in Hollywood. New funding issues have reared up, and other L.A. games are in progress now that the option has expired with someone famous still supposedly attached to direct and shoot.
It's a PG to PG13 family drama. I think it could be shot in Austin for probably low five figures or even less. Possibly not much more than PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (especially if the famous attachment drops out and deferrals rule).
My bank account tends to…

Well, I finally did it. I made the big move to LA. Granted, my fiance lives here and I know quite a few people out here already so it wasn't like I came solo. The move has been fantastic! I feel like my creative juices are flowing once again and I've got more stories I want to write. My newest script is almost done that I can't take the anticipation. It's my best writing so far and I'm looking forward to getting into my agent's hands.
I'm also looking to expand my writing services, if anyone is…

Hi All,
Hope you are well. I have been meaning to log on and post this for some time now! Karrie and I have the websites up for our production company Through Films and our short film Los Encinos. We are really excited to have these up.
Los Encinos is a human element story that explores tragedy and forgiveness as it parallels the lives of a struggling South Texas ranch family and a Mexican immigrant both hoping for a better future. The film chronicles the final fateful steps of their journeys…

The producer who has my low-budget horror script "Ravine" has lined up a distributor with some funding possibilities. The distributor says he needs a poster to show to his potential backers. Anybody know a movie-poster artist? I can't pay much, of course, but I'm not asking for "free." I've already tried working with a couple of artists with movie credits, and they ran into contract problems with their current employers and can't help.
We're basically selling a concept at this point. We don't h…

I've finished revising a 26-page, low-budget, PG short screenplay, MR CECIL'S FAMILY TREE. The story takes place on a couple of suburban neighborhood sidewalks and in a park. It has six speaking parts: four adults and two pre-teens.
MR. CECIL'S FAMILY TREE
A woman mourning the loss of her father to Alzheimer’s Disease tries to find her favorite childhood memory again but makes some new and better memories, instead.
If you'd like to read a PDF and give me some feedback, please email me at sidun…

As with all things in movies, it boils down to money. Let's examine the two basic costs in making a movie:
1. The negative cost: This is the cost to get from idea to a finished 35mm print. Script, actors, director, shooting, editing, music are all in this cost. This is the cost people usually talk about when discussing how much a movie "cost" to make. But it is not the only cost.
2. P&A cost: Prints and advertising. This is how much it costs to make all the 35mm prints and ship them to all…

I took a break from screenwriting to complete a 78-page novella titled "Jump." It's a tale of combat, sex, alienation and newspapers. The book is now available as a $1.99 e-book from Lulu.com, http://www.lulu.com/content/e-book/jump-a-novella/7460062
There might be a screenplay in it, but I'll have to wait until I get a few responses from people who have read it. Meanwhile, I'm helping a production company develop a feature screenplay, and I'll have a short screenplay -- a PG tale focusing on l…

Hey everyone, I know some of you have been doing this a long time and some just a short but we all are here because we have a vision and a passion. A passion to create and share our thoughts and ideas through the arts. I am looking to work with anyone who is interested in working together? I am now living in Atlanta , Georgia area and would love to find some kind of work. I am a composer/ musician / songwriter so maybe you need some cues or songs, maybe you know someone who does need something l…

The never ending movement of improving, or is it complicating, our business keeps producing new and interesting results.
Just when we thought it was safe to crash an audition they've devised the bar-code. Back in the good old days I crashed an audition once at Megan Branman's office. I almost got in but an alert secretary found me out. I got the nod from fellow actors for a good effort. A stupid effort but sometimes it's the spirit that counts. Well, now they're trying to take away our option t…

One of the producers involved in the controversial
Waco movie project has resigned her post with the production company and is returning to her home base in Austin. She contends political "pressure from above" the Texas Film Commission led to the denial of state production incentives for the $30 million movie. Read about it
here.

If someone is going to the Network Austin Mixer tonight to hear Texas Film Commissioner Bob Hudgins, I'd be curious to know how he defends the controversial part of the new moving-image production incentives.
I have to turn my focus back to several writing projects that need to be finished, so I may not be doing much mixing for a while or rabble-rousing regarding the clause that tries to guard against portraying "Texas or Texans in a negative fashion."
